This it the first episode of my new "series" , How to Speak the Leadership Code.
And on today's episode I will review one of the most critical skill that you have to master :the ability to process issues .
Issues are unavoidable. You will always have issues . In your business , In Your role. In your personal life.
The key is to know how to process those issues. How to manage them and how to master this process .
This includes brainstorming about the process you have by using different problem solving tools and techniques in order to get to the bottom of the problem.
Here are 10 steps that will help you to process issues effectively:
Dive in to get a clear understanding of the issue , the implications and the risks.
You will face different issues with different impact. Start with evaluating the impact of the issue and prioritize accordingly.
Fix the Process, Not the Problem- focus on understating the gaps you have in your processes by constantly ask "WHY". Try to view the issue as an opportunity for improvement.Taking this approach enforces you to look at the big picture and to identify the gaps you have .
Map out the relevant stakeholders ,their contribution and responsibility .
Don't be afraid to escalate.- There are some issues that can’t be resolved without escalation .Escalation in many cases helps to remove roadblocks so don't be afraid to ask for support.
Data gathering - Get feedback from the relevant stakeholders. Ask for supporting data and try to get as much as possible accurate information.
Data analysis- Make a list of potential root causes for the issue at stake.
Make a list of potential solutions and strategies you may take.
Evaluate the feasibility and the impact of each solution/strategy. Select 1 or 2 potential solutions or strategies that you believe will fix the issue.
Fix your process- Implement the solutions /strategies and ensure that you define process controls and clear criteria that will help you to indicate that the issue is resolved and your internal process is improved.
Issues happen on daily basis in many areas of our life. In most cases , it's not people screwing things up, it's the processes that are not up to date and need to be improved.
You can't just bury your head in the sand.Your problems will never go away until you deal with them.
Don'r wait and start using the above process to review and take action on the issues you have so you can proudly say to yourself : Bring it on – I can fix it!”
So ,which strategy are you normally use to process your issues?
As always, I will see you on your next Swell Venture and don't forget ,
Every Day Is Day One !
