Why do we fail? And why a failure could be your winning shot

Why do we fail? I believe that most of the events that shaped us and made us who we are and what we have become whether it is a good place or a bad place starts and ends with the decisions we take…..

Every day we all make hundreds of decisions, most of them are simple but a few might change our chances to succeed or even impact our life or other’s life! Therefore, it is so important to pay attention and be focused before you make a decision and in this article I'll share with you the rules that I normally use during my decision making process that I believe will increase your chances to make the right decision for you!!!

It all starts and ends with the decisions we make. Success or a failure is the sum total of the decisions we make every day

"I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and I missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life…….And that is why I succeed." (Michael Jordan, the greatest player ever who played the game).

So ,why do we fail? What is the number one reason that causes us to fail time after time? And why could this sometimes be your winning shot?

I'll use the following simple example to to explain my point. Why are there people have “good connections” or a wide social network that helps them to be promoted, to move forward , be more social and eventually , be more successful ?

We all know someone who seems to be the one who knows everyone , who seems to be the one who "has it all together" . The reason for that is quite simple... they made a decision to meet other people and be more social….they made a decision to get out of their couch and go out to meet other people. They made a decision to pay 1,000$ to attend 3 days event ,or they made a decision to go to social events, conferences , the local gym or to seminars…… By doing so, by making those decisions, they were able to add more connections, meet new friends and expand their REAL social network and expose themselves to more opportunities for self-development, for personal and financial growth and for new businesses.

It all starts and ends with the decisions we make. Success or a failure is the sum total of the decisions we make every day

Here are the 4 rules that I normally use to increase my chances to make good decisions: 1. I'M GETTING CLEAR ON MY OUTCOMES

I normally ask myself the following question: Is the outcome of the decision I'm about to make will serve my organization “WHY” ? does this decision support my goals, my vision , my beliefs? Will my decision help me get there? 2. SHOW ME THE DATA To make the right evaluation you have to collect historical data and relevant information. Supportive data allows you to look at trends , find opportunities and identify risks .

I truly believe in data and I always look for information to learn more about the subject in question I read articles, researches , books ,statistics and talk to experts to ensure that I have enough data to use during my decision process.

Next, I Write down all of my options based on the data I have.

Obviously there is a different weight for each decision and the amount of information and supportive data you will need will depend on the criticality and the importance of the decision you wish to take.

After carefully reviewing the data that I have , I narrow down the options on my list to the very top choices so I can make the right call.

3. STAKEHOLDERS

Based on my top choices , I look for the relevant stakeholders that will be impacted by those decisions .Think about how the decision would affect those around you.Make a list of them and write down the impact (positive OR negative) ,alternatives and mitigation plan .

Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world, so objections can and will come up so for those stakeholders who will object, try to analyze their ability to impact your decision and find out what could be the result of it.

This is a critical step since in many cases your decisions will involve or will impact others ,whether it's your employees, your neighbours ,your career or your loved ones.

4. FOLLOW YOUR GUT FEELING Steve Jobs said:" You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future".

We live in a data-driven world but there is one more ingredient in the decision making process which is critical ,,,,,your gut feeling, your intuition.

According to Forbes "more than 40% of CEOs say they still make decisions based on intuition, despite having access to troves of empirical data".

It takes years to build your own internal data base which is the source that you use when you listen to your gut feeling .I personally still learn how to listen to my gut and I am constantly working on it.

This is a skill that you can develop and train' and the more you use it during the decision making process the more you will make better decisions in business and in your personal life.

This approach has never let me down, and in some cases it made a huge difference in my life.

It all starts and ends with the decisions we make. Success or a failure is the sum total of the decisions we make every day
